HEALTH INITIATIVES
A.
Childhood
Injury Actions in APPA
At the Pre-Congress workshop “Childhood Injury: A
Regional Threat to Child Survival” of the 7th Asian
Congress of Paediatrics held in Perth, Australia, from May
4-5, 1991, delegates from 17 countries presented the problems and
intervention measures for childhood injury in their own countries.
The countries were: Australia, Singapore, Taiwan, India, Hong
Kong, Malaysia, Japan, Philippines, Indonesia, New Zealand, United
States, Thailand, Bangladesh, Vietnam, China, Myanmar and Nepal.
After two days of discussion and deliberation, the workshop
published a preamble, emerging themes and 19 recommendations. These
included the following action points for the national
associations/societies:
-
All
nations must establish injury prevention as a priority goal.
Increased research investment, and increased support for control
programs are needed in virtually every country.
-
There
should be a sustained attack on the prevention of all forms of
injury at all levels.
-
Pediatric
associations and societies should study national and local problems,
work as a collective team with other interested groups, keep
the government and public informed on the problems and advise on
what action is required, and ensure widespread publicity concerning
the extent of the problem and the need for action.
-
Targeted
studies on specific topics using scientific, comparable methods to
national studies elsewhere so as to permit international comparisons.
-
Advocacy
by pediatricians and pediatric societies and other bodies to strive
to define and support the creation and maintenance of safer
environments for children in their community.
-
First
Aid, resuscitation and accident prevention should be taught to all
parents and probably all potential parents and school children.
-
Positive publicity should promote road, toys, clothes,
product, sport and outdoor safety.
