HEALTH INITIATIVES
B.
Prevention of
Childhood
Injuries
Intentional
and Unintentional Recommendations by the IPA/WHO/UNICEF/HKPS
Pre-Congress Workshop, held in Hong Kong, on March 22-23, 1997
The
subjects of the above workshop, held during the 9th Asian Pediatric
Congress were Home Safety, Road Safety, Playground and Outdoor
Safety, Physical Abuse, Neglect, Emotional Abuse and Sexual Abuse.
Among the
recommendations made were:
-
Individual
participants should take back to their pediatric societies such
resolutions and declarations, the societies then being in a position
to advise and pressure appropriate legislators and government
ministries to enact them.
-
The
role of the pediatrician is clear in the childhood injury field; it
is important to recognize more “child health” aspects of care
above traditional, more academic – clinical specialization.
-
Pediatric
societies should be encouraged to form injury groups with emphasis
on recognition and prevention.
-
The
International Pediatric Association (IPA) should promote courses for
pediatricians on recognition, handling and prevention of
injuries, particularly for physical and sexual abuse. APPA
will promote the creation of visiting fellowships to developing
countries to encourage and help towards prevention of all childhood
injuries.
-
Legislation
is a key to so many aspects of childhood injury handling and
prevention, and IPA and pediatric societies must work hard towards
cooperating, coordinating, advising appropriate branches of
government.
Nevertheless,
there has been sustained efforts among the APPA member-countries to
combat childhood injury problems with considerable progress.
