ABSTRACT

Lactose intolerance is common among Asian children. This paper studies the incidence of lactose intolerance among healthy children in Singapore using oral lactose breath hydrogen test and milk breath hydrogen test.
It was found that 74.6% of the children had evidence of lactose intolerance and all the races were similarly affected. There was an increasing incidence with increasing age. Significantly fewer children were symptomatic when milk was used as a source of lactose.

Key words:
breath test, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, flatulence.
