INTRODUCTION

Leprosy is a chronic granulomatous disease caused by M.leprae, also known as Hansen’s
Bacillus after the name of its discoverer. The most commonly affected tissues are skin and nerves. It also affects the muscles, eyes, certain internal organs e.g., kidney, liver, adrenals and in males testicles. Leprosy occupies a special position among communicable diseases because of the long duration of the disease, the frequency of disabilities and the social and economic consequences it endangers. Chronic skin lesions, madriosis, sensory neuropathy resulting in the loss of digits/ limbs and paresis secondary to motor nerve dysfunction are among its sequelae and disabilities which led to the historical stigmatisation of the ‘leper’(1).
