Abstract
Systemic lupus
erythematosus and Sjogren’s syndrome are common diseases in the
Chinese community. However the true incidence and clinical
manifestations of neonatal lupus syndrome (NLS) born to Chinese
mothers with SLE or SS are not well described in the literature. We
report our experience of managing four Chinese babies with NLS.
Three mothers had SLE. One mother was asymptomatic though her mother
and sister had SLE. The four babies were born at full term but
relatively small (2.21 – 2.9 kg). All mothers and babies had
positive anti-SSA/Ro and/or anti SSB/La antibodies. Only one baby
had congenital complete heart block, and 2 patients had typical skin
rash of NLS. Instead liver manifestations (as hepatomegaly,
cholestasis, raised liver enzymes) were common (75%), as were
cytopenias (75%). Manifestations may occur beyond the neonatal
period. A larger prospective study is required to confirm these
preliminary observations.
