Dr. Afroze Ramazan Sherali

Director of N.I.C.H and Professor of Pediatric

Dr. Afroze Ramzan Sherali obtained her MBBS from the Fatima Jinnah Medical College (FJMC) in Lahore, Pakistan in 1968 and received a “Gold Medal” for being the best graduate of the year

She obtained her FCPS in Pediatric from the College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan, Karachi in 1978 and has been a faculty member at the National Institute of Child Health (NICH) since then. Because of her special interest in paediatic Nephrology, she was nominated by the Ministry of Health, Islamabad for an award from the British Council, to undergo training in the subject of Paediatric Nephrology at Guy’s Hospital, London for a period of one year in 1987. 

Dr. Afroze was therefore, the first paediatrician from Pakistan to be trained in Paediatric Nephrology. After her return from London, she set up a Paediatric Nephrology ward at NICH where all types of renal and urological cases are managed and dialysis of young children are carried out. At present, she is the Director of National Institute of Child Health in Karachi, Professor of Pediatrics and Head of the Department of Pediatrics Nephrology at the NICH.

Besides that, Dr. Afroze is also an active fellow of the college and participates in training and academic activities of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan. She is an ardent social worker and has been associated with the Aga Khan Development Network in an Honorary Capacity for more than two decades, and also an active member of the Pakistan Pediatric Association (PPA) and is the chairperson of Pediatric Nephrology Group of PPA.

Dr. Afroze also represents Pakistan on the council of Asian Pediatric Nephrology Association and is a member of the International Pediatric Nephrology Association and Pakistan Society of Nephrology. To date, she has more than 40 publications to her credit and presented papers in many national and international scientific meetings.

b)       Consultant Pediatric hematologist & Oncologist, Nanavati Hospital, Vile Parle & Dr. Agarwal Children Hospital, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Center & Laboratory, Bandra, Mumbai.

 

Papers and Publications:

1.                   More than 50 publications in peer reviewed journals in the field of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology (PHO) and also more than 100 research papers presented at various national and international conferences;

2.                   Former Editor of PHO REVIEW – quarterly newsletter of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Chapter of IAP for the year 1994-1996 and Editor for Reference Manual on Practical Pediatric Oncology published in 1997, 2nd edition 2003;

3.                   Chapter convenor for the IAP Textbook of Pediatrics for Undergraduates for the chapter on Pediatric hematology/Oncology and chapter in book on Pediatric Oncology, 3rd edition, by Pizzo & Popplack. Chapter on Treatment of Leukemias in book by Pui, 2003.

 

Organisational activities:

a-                   Society of Pediatric Oncology) for 2005-2008 and Chair of Education Subcommittee of SIOP;

b-                   Chairman (2005-07) and Hon. Secretary of P.H.O. Chapter of IAP (1994-1996) and Bombay Hematology Group (1993-94) and Mumbai Branch of IAP 1999-2000;

c-                   Hon. Secretary General IAP (2004-05) and executive body member of Indian Society of hematology and Blood Transfusion, Hon. Secretary General of SIOP International (International Indian Society of Medical & Pediatric Oncologists and IAP – West Zone, Indian Co-Operative Oncology Network (ICON); and

d-                   Former National Co-ordinator for the SIOP Initiative in India of the SIOP: National Training Project in Practical Pediatric Oncology.

 

Honours and Awards:

1.       Received ‘Travelling Fellowships’ from SIAP and World Federation of Hemophilia for advanced training in pediatric oncology and comprehensive care of hemophilia.

2.       Received “Best Subspeciality Chapter of IAP” annual award for two consecutive years (1995, 1996) as Honorary Secretary of the PHO Chapter. Also received Best Branch Award of IAP for two consecutive years: 1999 and 2000 as Hon. Secretary of Mumbai Branch of IAP.

3.       Invited Guest Faculty for International, National and State level conferences, symposia and workshops. Invited guest speaker for the 22nd International Congress of Pediatric (IPA) Amsterdam 1998.
