‘A’ RATING FOR 95 PERCENT
ATTENDANCE RATIO IN MALAYSIA
Malaysia gets an A for educating children.
The
grade was given by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for
Malaysia’s success in increasing the attendance ratio, especially
for girls in primary education.
The
attendance ratio for schoolgirls is 95.3 percent, compared to 95.1
percent for boys.
UNICEF representative to Malaysia, Gaye Phillips applauded the
Malaysian government’s efforts in creating opportunities for low
income families and those in rural areas to obtain primary education
as exemplary.
“The Government’s success is due to its receptiveness to various
policies including the 1975 text-book-on-loan-scheme and the 1983
school milk programme. The budget set aside for education has also
increased significantly, allowing further development.
“I
believe Malaysia can achieve this aspect of the Millennium
Development Goals before the 2015 target,” she said.
The
Millennium Development Goals set by the United Nations aims to,
among others, tackle inequalities that prevent 115 million children
worldwide, most of whom are girls, from getting primary education.
