INDIAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS ….. at a glance!

 

The Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) was formed by amalgamation of the Association of the Pediatricians of India and the Indian Pediatric Society at its joint conference held in 1963 at Hyderabad.  It has now grown over the years to more than 14993 members, 26 State Branches, 217 Regional /District / City Branches, 16 pediatric subspecialty chapters, 8 Interest Groups, 4 Cells and 1 Education Centre, 6 Task forces & 10 National Committees!

 

IAP ACTION PLAN – 2005

 

Among the major activities planned for year 2005:

 

Standardization of Office Practice: A module having algorithmic approach to diagnosis from common symptoms in office practice is prepared. The members of IAP will be trained in SOP through IAP branches all over the country.

 

Safe Injection Practices:  The IAP National Task Force on Safe Injection Practices organized the Trainers Training Workshop and a module and set of slides are prepared for conducting about 40 workshops all over the country.

 

Best Parenting and Child Health Skills: This is the community program for training of mothers in parenting skills and impart knowledge about child health issue. A small booklet for parents and a module for faculty has been prepared. 

 

Breath Free for Quality Life:  The Bronchial Asthma awareness program for members as well as for community has been launched.  The Asthma Training Module will be provided for duplication and free distribution amongst the participants in the workshop.

 

Quality Reinforcement in Immunization:  With an aim of improving the Universal Immunization Program and its coverage, IAP will be organizing workshops in the major cities of AEG States with the help of United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The workshops on “Immunization – Present & Future” will also be organized in different parts of the country. 

 

Children of Urban Poor and Migratory Population:  The theme selected for this year is “Extra Care for Children of Urban Poor and Migratory Population.”

 

Training of Teachers Workshop in IMNCI:  A program is drawn for organizing TOT Workshop in IMNCI. Six workshops are planned. About 30 participants will be trained in each workshop. Four workshops are planned for Orientation of HOD Pediatrics in IMNCI with 50 participants in each workshop.

 

Low Osmolar ORS Symposia:  The IAP in collaboration with USAID & WHO has initiated educational symposia on use and benefit of new “Low Osmolar ORS”. To start with, symposia were conducted in 5 cities viz. Lucknow, Ranchi, Patna, Bhopal and Jaipur through IAP branches.

 

PEDICON 2005

 

The 42nd National Conference of Indian Academy of Pediatrics (PEDICON 2005) was held from 6th to 9th January 2005 in Science City and Hotel ITC Sonar Bangla Sheraton & Towers at Kolkata. A few highlights of the conference are as follows:

 

More than 5000 delegates attended the conference. Regular 4 pre and 1 post conference news bulletins were published. The scientific programs were organized in 10 halls and there were more than 300 speakers.

 

The 16 Pre conference workshops were organized on 4th & 5th January 2005. Among the topics covered were Neonatal Ventilation,Common Pediatric Emergencies, Pediatric Imaging, Neuro developmental Disorders, Pediatric Gastroenterology, Childhood Bronchial Asthma, Emergencies in Pediatric Nephrology, Pediatric Cardiology and Legal / Ethical Issues of Pediatric Practice.

 

Highlights of the main conference were:

 

Symposia of various IAP Subspecialty Chapters were discussed. Among them: Survival of HIE Neonates, Recent Advances in Management of Congestive Heart Failure, Substance Abuse in Children and Adolescent, Poisoning in children, Wrong Diagnosis – Is it Negligence, An Approach to a child with dermatological problem, Child Growth & Development Environment Influences, Management of Children in Disaster Situation, Malabsorption Syndrome in children, Neurogenetics, Antimicrobial Therapy & Infection & Antibacterial prophylaxis.

 

Guest Lectures also touched on topics on Intractable Epilepsy, Current & Future Prospects for Pediatric Liver Transplant, Treating the fetus “State of the Art”, The Girl Child – A Surgeon’s Perspective, Role of Steroids in Management of Shock, Recurrent Abdominal Pain in Children, Behavioral Management of ADHD and Follow-up, Hyponatremia – How do I manage?, Neonatal Survival: Challenges & Opportunities, Investigation & Treatment of Short Stature Resistant to Growth Hormone: When and How?, Antibiotics in respiratory infection: Strategies to preserve effectiveness of antibiotics and  Adolescent Sexuality.

 

Plenary Sessions discussed matters on Child Survival Partnership: Towards National Vision 2020 and Standardization of Office Practice

 

Other Scientific Sessions activities included Award & Free Papers Sessions (about 400 papers), Final Round of the 17th IAP Pediatric Quiz for Undergraduates, Final Round of the IAP Practicing Pediatricians Quiz, Bag, Dialogue Sessions, Meet the Experts Session, View Points and Debates. 

 

4th ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE OF PEDIATRIC ASSOCIATION OF SAARC

 

The Scientific Program of Pediatric Association of SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation), was organized on January 9, 2005 at ITC Sonar Bangla. Delegates from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka in addition to India, participated in the conference.
